This form should only be used for questions related to certified technician and technician trainee registrations.

Before you contact the Board, did you know...

Applications are processed in the order received.  Once an application has been reviewed, applicants will be notified via e-mail with instructions on how to submit outstanding materials. Initial and renewal paper applications take approximately 2 weeks to process once received, please plan accordingly. 

Requests for status updates or confirmation of the receipt of an application will not be provided at this time.

Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) 657 provides the rules that the Board uses to govern the practice of pharmacy in Iowa.  Chapter 3 contains specific rules regarding technicians.

You must submit notification of a change in your name, address, or pharmacy employment status within 10 days of the change.  Address and employment changes can be made through your online profile, HERE.  If you have not previously registered for an account you will need to sign up for one. Name changes require submission of the legal name change document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, name change petition) and can be submitted online.

National Certification through PTCB or NHA is different than your Iowa Board of Pharmacy certified technician registration.  They may expire at different times; however, both are required to be active in order to work as a certified pharmacy technician.  Failure to maintain one or both while working in a pharmacy can result in revocation of your Iowa registration or other disciplinary sanctions. 

It is critical that you complete initial and renewal applications timely and honestly. 

  • If you are in doubt whether to disclose criminal history you can look yourself up at Iowa Courts Online or give us a call.  Trust us, it is better to provide full disclose on your application than to have us find undisclosed criminal history.
  • Write clearly! 
  • Timely submit your application.  Receipt of an application in the Board office does not allow you to work or guarantee it will be processed by the time it is due.  You must be currently registered within 30 days from the date of employment or by the time your registration expires, otherwise, you cannot work in the pharmacy. 
  • Technician trainee registrations are only valid for one year from the date of employment in the pharmacy. No exceptions.

If you have already emailed or left a voice message for staff in the last 3 business days, please do not send additional emails.  Multiple contacts only delays the process.  

How Can You Help?

  • Provide a valid e-mail account for expedient communications.  Not providing direct contact information will delay the process.
  • Thoroughly review the fees due and instructions provided within the application.  Important instructions and a checklist of required items are provided. 

  • Thoroughly review applications to ensure they are completed accurately before submitting to the Board.  Applications that are incomplete or include errors will take longer to process.

  • Limit e-mail and phone call inquires to once a week.  Please designate one person to contact staff with questions.
